Bebe Vio can be called the most popular swordswoman in the world. The 24-year-old Italian has more than a million followers on Instagram*. There are many people with a blue tick among them: the most famous football player on the planet Cristiano and the first European Tiktoker who gained 100 million subscribers, Xabi Leim, as well as actress Penelope Cruz, Roma legend Francesco Totti, Milan legend Paolo Maldini and many others.

At the Paralympics in Tokyo, Bebe won her second gold medal in her career, and yet 11 years ago she was told that wheelchair fencing was not a sport for her, and she would never succeed here.
Beatrice Maria Adelaide Marcia Vio, better known as Bebe Vio, was born in Venice as an absolutely healthy child. At the age of five, she became interested in fencing. Then she set a goal for herself – to become an Olympic champion. After a couple of years of classes, she was already among the best in the country. But at 11 everything changed.
“I was training in the fencing hall and I had a severe headache. At home, she found a huge bruise on her forehead. Mom asked me: “Did you fence without a mask?” I replied: “Mom, of course not.” I was just a tomboy as a child. It turned out that I had meningitis. I am very lucky because 97 percent of people die in the first two hours. What happened next, I don’t remember. I fell into a coma,” Bebe recalled.

Vio says it was like a fencing fight with a body part trying to kill her.
To save the girl’s life, doctors had to amputate both her arms.
“They told me that this disease was defeated, don’t worry. But she returned. They said that it is possible to amputate to amputate the legs. My parents were so afraid that I made the decision for them. If there is even a 1 percent chance that I will survive, we will amputate my legs. The hardest thing these days was for my family. They were not allowed to stay in the hospital. They left and said: “Bye”, but I did not know what it meant: “see you” or “goodbye.”
Bebe won her most important fight. But for her, a completely different life began. She had to get used to her new body. At first, the girl refused to even sit in a wheelchair, because she always thought that it was intended for the elderly. After two years of rehabilitation, Beba wanted to return to fencing. She came to her old hall, where she learned about wheelchair fencing.
But at first glance she did not like the new sport at all. Vio came to the hall to practice Olympic fencing, she did not want to accept herself as an athlete with disabilities.
“What is this? This is not fencing! This is for the disabled. I don’t want to play sports for the disabled,” Bebe was indignant.

But wheelchair fencing didn’t want to accept her either. In order to practice this sport, you must have a hand and at least three fingers to hold a weapon. At the first training sessions, Bebe’s father solved the problems in a simple way: he taped the rapier to the girl’s prosthesis with tape. However, everyone told her that in this way you would not achieve success here, it was impossible.
These conversations did not stop Bebe. She continued to fence, and later she was made a special removable structure so that she could hold a rapier. Two years after Vio learned about her terrible diagnosis, she began to compete again, becoming the first fencer in the world to compete with prosthetic arms.
Bebe remembered her childhood dream of becoming an Olympic champion, but she had to change her focus to the Paralympics. And went to the goal confidently. A year after her debut in a new sport, she won the junior national championship, four years later – the adult World Cup, five years later – the world championship.

“I had a hard time in Rio because of problems with my hand. A week before the Games, I couldn’t fence. Everyone trained, got better, and I just sat. I returned to training two days before the start, but I didn’t do well. I was nervous. I couldn’t control myself. If they don’t believe in me, it’s okay. But if I don’t believe in myself, that’s a problem.”
After delivering the victory shot in the Paralympics final, Bebe deafened the stadium with her cry of victory, nearly jumping out of her wheelchair for joy. She quickly put on prosthetic legs and ran to the podium with the Italian flag to hug her family.
“Is she excited about her first point in the final?! I wonder how she will scream if she inflicts the fifteenth injection, ”commentators of that final were surprised. The manner of fighting and the celebration of precise injections made the whole of Italy fall in love with Bebe, and the whole world fell in love with her optimism and self-irony. For example, in a photo of someone using Bebe’s hand prosthesis as a phone holder, Bebe captioned: “Mom always told me that I could be anything in life … So I decided to become a selfie stick.”

Participates in various TV show ceremonies. Once she was even invited to Washington to the administration of the President of the United States. Bebe then thought it was a prank, but still agreed. The invitation turned out to be real.

In the summer of 2020, the documentary Phoenix Rising was released on Netflix. It tells the story of 10 Paralympic athletes, most of whom are now competing in Tokyo. Bebe became the central figure. It is her photograph that adorns the main poster of the film, and “Phoenix” appeared in her honor in the title of the film – that was the name of the girl in the children’s camp. The film won two Emmy Awards.

Bebe understands the value of his popularity and tries to use it properly. Together with her parents, she founded a foundation that promotes sports as a therapy for young people with prosthetic limbs and helps amputees enjoy the beauty of life and integrate into society.
