♫Why doesn’t dad talk about her? Mom would say ♫: because I never loved her the way you love

♫Why doesn’t dad talk about her? Mom would say ♫: because I never loved her the way you love

Stuck listening to the song ♫Dead Mom♫ from the musical “Beetlejuice” in different versions. This is a musical indignation of a teenager because of how her father reacts to the death of the person dearest to her, her evil sadness caught many, so many covers of this song were created, but I liked Chloe’s cover the most:

= “Listen mother, dead mother, I could use a little help here.
I’m probably talking to myself right now. But…
Dead mother, I have to ask: are you really underground?
Because I feel you in everything that surrounds me.
Are you there, dead mother?
Dead Mom…

Dead Mom, I’m tired of trying to smooth things over.
I am a pile of broken pieces. It was thanks to you that I was whole.
Every day dad looks at me like everyone else:
“Hurry up, become happy, move on. Forget about your mom.” nine0005

Because dad is in denial, dad doesn’t want to feel.
He wants me to smile and clap my hands like a trained seal.
I ignored it for a while, but dad really went nuts.
You won’t believe what a mess we’ve become.

You are my home, my place.
And I am your copy, your strange creation.
You held my hand – and life became easier.
Now the jokes don’t work – and no one sees me. nine0013 Nothing seems to fit.
Mom, is that right?
Can you hear me?
I need something to believe in or I’m done.

Take me somewhere where I can live as before,
or I will lock myself in my room – wake me up when I am of age.
Dad “moves on”, dad did not lose mom.

Mom, can you give me a sign? I’m running out of hope and time.
Invasion of mice, lightning strike – or a nuclear explosion.

I don’t play my dad’s game anymore. I’ll go crazy if nothing changes. nine0013 I’ll do anything to make him say your name,
dead mom -lyrics).

♫She would like us to talk about her. Why doesn’t he talk about her? I am absolutely sure that if it was daddy who died, mom would have done this♫ (https://genius.com/Original-broadway-cast-of-beetlejuice-mama-would-lyrics)? Because he never loved her the way you do. Because for you she was the woman dearest to you, mischievous, bright, loving and beloved, but for him she was more like a device with the same basic functions that others have: she cooks, washes, pleases, decorates the interior, brings up her daughter, creating a reputation as a reliable family man, which can be sold at a higher price – well, that’s good. Died? Hmm, we need to quickly find a replacement for her in order to dump on her all the work that the deceased did, including listening to her daughter’s whining. You tell her (like a woman to a woman) that she be positive there, not embarrass my gentle fatherly eyes with her gloomy appearance and believe that there is some deep meaning in everything and that everything is for the best. This outburst of sincere emotion makes me tense. nine0005

P. S. The worst people at the funeral and right after:

* those from whom you did not hide that this funeral for you is nothing more than the last tribute to people close only by blood, who killed your warm feelings for them with special cruelty long ago – for a long time, and who nevertheless behaves as if you are saying goodbye to your best friend / dearly beloved sister;

*those who know how much and sincerely you loved and love the dead, but behave as if they are people you barely know. nine0005

gender and gender, music, platonic love, reproductive labor, death and immortality, a good deed will not be called marriage

45th anniversary of Donna Summer’s “Love To Love You Baby” album and the disco era70s. His formation was influenced by such authoritative African-American musical styles as soul and funk. Disco dominated the pop charts in the second half of the 1970s. There is an opinion that it was not so much music as a way of life.

Let’s see if this is really so? The name “disco” was borrowed from Spanish and Italian, a synonym for the English “disk” (“disk”, “record”). The style originated from the ancient love and craving of people for rhythmic movements called dances. Soul contributed to disco its entertaining mite, and funk – rhythmic. nine0005

Disco music was for dancing only. Disco became a fashion phenomenon, being filtered out in various disco clubs, which sometimes had a very dubious reputation and orientation. Paul Roland notes that “many of the disco artists were anonymous recording session musicians or failed soul singers (or singers).”

They had sufficient qualifications and knowledge to ensure that the songs were performed well for dances that did not burden the intellect. But, unfortunately, they “could offer little in terms of melody and lyrics” to create compositions with a real and memorable personality. nine0005

“In fact no one listened to disco as music because it had minimal musical quality.” It not only seemed, but actually was monotonous. The dancers could hardly distinguish between the recordings, identifying them by the number of rhythmic beats per minute. “As a result, the number of beats per minute began to be printed on the record label so that the DJ would not get confused and could move from one record to another. At the same time, the public might not even notice that the record has changed…”, notes Paul Roland. Thus, the demand for disco style created a market for club record players, since not all establishments could afford to hire live bands all night. nine0005

The rare exceptions that only proved the rule were genuine soul stars like James Brown or Sly And The Family Stone, whose records were hugely popular before disco made its stars.

“You can’t crush the desert by counting all the grains of sand”, – as the famous science fiction writer Robert Heinlein put it in the novel “Stranger In A Strange Land”. Disco artists appeared in the 1970s in a myriad of ways. Swedes fired loudly ABBA , whose work paved the way for a considerable number of diverse and unknown bands.

For example, listeners remember the West German formation Boney M (with evergreen hits like “Papa Cool”, “Ma Baker”, “Belfast”, “Rasputin”, “Rivers Of Babylon”), their countrymen Arabesque and Dschinghis Khan. Spanish duo Baccara. Italian stars Al Bano and Romina Power (if anyone forgot, the duo was formed back in 1969) and the Ricci e Poveri group (created in 1967).

Some of these artists (looking at them, it may occur to someone that all this is one person or several heads of one not too cunning hydra) are still spudding the outlying “glades” of the musical world, performing at retro festivals, where nostalgic listeners dance with pleasure to the soundtracks of aged idols. And why not? As they say, the taste and color … If someone is “pinned” by disco rhythms, good luck! The author himself is not averse to sometimes shaking the old days under some kind of soulful little thing, given, for example, in this article. nine0005

But, in addition to the above names, in my opinion, perhaps the heroine of our article, Donna Summer (real name and surname LaDonna Andre Gaynes), her colleague Gloria Gaynor, Chic, KC&The Sunshine Band and veterans of the pop scene, the Australian vocal group the Bee Gees (whose reputation was successfully restored by the 1977 film “Saturday Night Fever”) managed to do something memorable and serious in pop music 1970s.

Donna Summer is considered to be the queen of disco. Donna was born in 1949 in Boston. At first, she performed in various musicals. Then she participated in the production of the rock opera Hair, with which she went on tour to Europe. There she met producer Giorgio Moroder. The meeting became fateful. The result of their union was the 17-minute hit “Love To Love You Baby” of the same name with her second album.

The reviews of those times immediately appreciated the work of Summer and Moroder. For example, Billboard wrote avidly about the “excellent selection of things”, highlighting the 17-minute first side, which in its entirety “represents Mrs. Summer’s soft and husky voice, stretching from pop and disco to soul and jazz.” No wonder that the record almost immediately entered the top 20 albums in the US and UK of its time. nine0005

The secret behind the success of the title track was the explicit sexual context. In fact, the song is a musical illustration of the female orgasm. The idea of its creation belongs to Donna herself. Inspired by the famous song “Je t’aime … moi non plus” (which was soulfully performed by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg), Donna decided to compose something similar and came up with this idea to Giorgio in the summer of 1975 years old. They created the first three-minute version of “Love to Love You Baby”, which didn’t hit the market at first.

Donna was satisfied with the very fact of recording a song that was bold at the time. But Moroder was not only delighted with Summer’s fiery sobs and moans, but insisted on releasing the song as a separate single. In subsequent interviews, the singer admitted that she was not completely sure of the content of the song’s lyrics and improvised during the recording, acting out the achievement of sexual ecstasy, imagining herself in the image of Marilyn Monroe. nine0005

The success of the record was greatly facilitated by the help of Neil Bogart, head of Casablanca Records. He simply fell in love with Summer’s work and asked to make the composition as long as possible. As a result, a 17-minute disco orgy was included in the final version of the album. “Love to Love You Baby” became the singer’s first super hit in America, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in early 1976. He lit up on prizes and in the dance charts.

Not without a scandal, which also stimulated interest in recording. The composition was branded as “obscene” by some of the “guardian” critics. It was censored and banned from broadcast on some Puritan radio stations. Time magazine also excelled, estimating that “as many as 22 orgasms were simulated in the creation of the track,” skillfully portrayed by the singer. After the release of this song, Summer was deservedly named “The First Lady of Love” (Eng. “The First Lady of Love”). nine0005

The album itself was composed as follows. The title track, and the only track on the front side of the album, was the hypnotic “Love to Love You Baby”. The second side was filled with no less refined, tailored according to the patterns of soul and rhythm and blues: “Full of Emptiness”, “Need-a-Man Blues”, ballad “Whispering Waves”, sexy “Pandora’s Box”, “Full of Emptiness ( Reprise)” is a reprise of the first track. Other (European) releases had the same first side as the American one, but the composition of the songs on the second side of the album varied. nineSparks different from the metronome. Moroder also did not stop there and went further.
