“Calendar ma (y) ya” – a rare family movie today, which has a high-quality literary basis, based on a book recognized by readers of our days. Victoria Lederman: Of course, there are a lot of impressions and it is impossible to describe them. In short, the author is satisfied. Director Victoria Fanasyutina (who is also a screenwriter) handled the text quite carefully, leaving the main storyline and all the key points. In addition, the film has a fantastic cast. When I first got on the set and saw my heroes come to life, I had a joyful shock – they were exactly the same, the very ones that I originally had in my head. It’s just a 100% hit in the images. Apparently, Victoria and I not only have the same names, but we also think the same way.
The only thing is, will such a movie arouse interest among schoolchildren, because now they need action and special effects.
And here the film turned out in such, say, classical traditions … As for me, this is wonderful. But children are different now, how to interest them?
Victoria Lederman : The film is an adventure, with a fantastic element, besides, it turned out to be kind, family, sometimes cheerful, sometimes sad, and it seems to me that it will not let young viewers get bored. I do not think that children are so different that they are not interested in eternal topics – good and evil, life and death, friendship, love, etc. Inside they are the same as we were at one time, they just have different tools for communicating with the outside world.
Your debut story “Calendar Ma(y)” became a hit, and six years later the film adaptation arrived. How did this film history come about?
Victoria Lederman: I still can’t believe that this happened, that the film is ready and the audience will see it. It is still fantastic for me.
When readers more or less recognized the book, many companies and directors turned to the publishing house with a proposal to film “Calendar”. But here Karo Production, apparently, turned out to be more persistent and interested. An agreement was signed with them. Then we waited a long time to see if the Ministry of Culture would support this project, and when everything finally came together, of course, it was a great joy for all of us.
In the story by the Strugatsky brothers “Monday begins on Saturday” time also moved in the opposite direction and was called contramotion. Did this work of theirs inspire you with such a plot, or how did the idea come about?
Victoria Lederman: I didn’t get along with the Strugatskys since childhood. I respect them as classics of Soviet science fiction, but I could never read their books – I tried many times, then I realized that it was not for me. It happens, they are not “my” writers. So I didn’t know anything about contramotion.
When the text of the “Calendar of May (th) I” was already ready and sent to the Krapivin Prize, some of my acquaintances told me about this reference to a similar idea. With fright, I read “Monday begins on Saturday” to the end (which I had not been able to do before) and calmed down, realizing that our plots are completely different. And then I even felt some pride that I was on the same wavelength with the classics.
You wrote your first story at the age of nine. Do you remember the first line from it?
Victoria Lederman: No, I don’t even remember the plot, what’s the first line! Most likely, it was, as they say now, a fan fiction for Yuri Tomin’s book “A magician was walking through the city.” I really loved such stories, when something unusual, fantastic or magical happens in our ordinary world. I’ve always wondered how ordinary heroes (not wizards, not supermen) would deal with this.
The characters in your books are always very real.
You read the story and feel like you are among them. Probably, during the work at the school, a lot of stories have accumulated. Has it ever happened that your students recognized themselves in your books, called, wrote to inform about it?
Victoria Lederman: I haven’t worked at school for a long time, so my former students probably don’t know about my writing. Yes, I had a lot of school stories, which I later used in my books. But I basically don’t have prototypes, I rearrange plots and characters like a mosaic and create something new. Therefore, it will probably be quite difficult for someone to recognize themselves in the heroes.
Now there is a lot of talk about the fact that children have stopped reading. You often communicate with your audience and their parents. Do you also think that the percentage of children who read is very small?
Victoria Lederman: No, I don’t think so. And in our time there were enough guys who did not know from which end they open the book.
And now I see a lot of children reading. Another thing is that they may not read what we adults want.
What is the most unusual question your readers have asked you at meetings?
Victoria Lederman: The most interesting and unexpected question would be “Have you read your books?” By the way, a serious question, if you think about it.
Another one! And what did you answer?
Victoria Lederman: I said I always read it when I get a new book. And I answered: “Well, how do you like it?” Everyone laughed and I didn’t have to answer.
Communicating with children, do you feel how much interest they have in general in school stories, stories that talk about friendship, relationships, some everyday problems? Now it is fashionable to talk with children about topics that have not been raised openly in literature before: bullying, relationships that do not fit into the norm, divorce of parents .

Victoria Lederman : Children have different interests. Some people want to read serious books, just about such “painful” topics. Give others magic, fantasy and adventure. We are all different, and we need different books, and it’s great when modern children’s and teenage readers can satisfy any children’s demand with their texts. Let everyone find what he likes, let every “non-reading” child meet, finally, with “his” book, which will open to him this vast and colorful world of literary universes.

An excellent movie for the whole family that definitely deserves attention. The plot tells how important it is sometimes to change inside and actually start life from scratch, correcting your most important mistakes. The film teaches to appreciate loved ones, friends, acquaintances and never give up under the pressure of difficulties. At the same time, it is full of adventures, unexpected plot twists, and the main characters are immediately remembered and arouse honest interest.
