Notre Dame de la Gallina is a chapel in a place called Nerthe , at 16 — m in the arrondissement of Marseille.
1 Visiting the chapel Notre-Dame-de-la-Galline is located in the hamlet of La Nerthe, at the extreme north-western tip of the city of Marseille, on the old path that connects the city with the Etang-de-Berre through the Nerthe mountain range. It is reached by a narrow winding road from the Estaque Riaux. The chapel is surrounded by several houses, unique remnants of an old village in which the chapel was a parish church.
It should be noted that on a rocky promontory overlooking the chapel are the remains of an old fortified castle, known as «Castle in the Air», which used to protect the passage.
The name galline is a Frenchization of Provençal galino ( Gaļina in standard Occitan), meaning chicken . This name was given to the chapel because it contains a fifteenth-century statue of the Virgin Mary carrying the baby Jesus with a chicken in her hand.
According to popular legend, the chapel was built in this place of the first Christian age by Lazarus or two hermits on IV — th century. The building, built in the Middle Ages, was consecrated as La Nerthe Church on 3 March 1042 by Bishop Pons II of Marseille.
Virgin and Child with Gallinus
In 1430, a statue of the Virgin and Child was erected here, from which the infant Jesus carried a small chicken in his left hand. Chicken is a symbol of protection. The hen shelters and reminds her chickens in the face of danger in places that were precisely dangerous at that time, since the coastal road did not exist, and the road from Saint-Louis to Rove passed through Nerta, and nearby a valley that would later bear the name of the Murderers. N.D. de Gallin is mainly used for two purposes:
Legends attribute the double protection of Gallinus and Saint Roch to the fact that during the plague of 1720 there were no casualties either in La Nerta, L’Estaca or Rio.
In 1439 the church was renamed » Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Nert «, it became a place of popular worship.
In the following centuries, many former voters were placed here. The church was enlarged by XVIII — m century .
After the revolution, the village almost disappeared, the church joins the parish of Seon-Saint-Henri and becomes a modest chapel, but remains a place of pilgrimage. After a relative disaster recovery for the Italian workers of the Nerthe railway tunnel in the middle of XIX — th century, she is permanently attached to the Estaque.
In 1866, the Marseille artist Paul Guigou painted a picture of the chapel.
This painting is currently in the Perigueux Museum. The terminal located in front of the chapel gives detailed information about this table.

The chapel has a simple rectangular nave built of limestone blocks and supported by a ribbed cross under a gable roof covered with hollow tiles. The nave is illuminated by two compartments located on the sides. Access through a side door covered by a semi-circular arch leading to a vestibule topped with a wooden canopy.
Interior finish — composite. The pearl is a colored Romanesque wooden statue depicting the Madonna and Child seated with the baby Jesus and holding galina on her left hand.
The stained glass windows of the two recent bays depict respectively the Virgin with Galline and Saint Roch. The walls are decorated with several paintings: «Tears of St. Peter», «Flight into Egypt», «Saint Rita» and a number of votive offerings. All this development is included in the national furniture inventory (Palissy base) of the Ministry of Culture.

The chapel is usually closed, but mass is celebrated here every month, and every 8 September the pilgrimage crowd celebrates the Nativity of the Virgin here.
