The province of Alicante has long been famous for its amazing Mediterranean Costa Blanca, but no less remarkable is its mountainous terrain, which is found almost everywhere, with the exception of some river valleys in the south.
Surprisingly, Alicante is one of the most mountainous provinces in Spain and, although these ranges are not the highest, their steep slopes with significant elevation changes, breathtaking Mediterranean views, unique flora and fauna constantly beckon to itself lovers of hiking from all over the world. The mountains of Alicante are part of the vast Cordilleras Béticas mountain system and form several parallel chains of mountain ranges located from southwest to northeast:
The plains are characteristic primarily of the southern and southeastern zone of the province and are formed by two valleys – El Segura (Valle del Segura) and El Vinalopo (Valle del Vinalopó). nine0003
The main relief lines of Alicante are lined with the Cordillera Betica mountain ranges and are young in relation to the history of the Earth. The creation of the modern relief began at the depth of the vast seabed, thanks to sedimentary deposits, which subsequently underwent tectonic impact. Active soil erosion under the influence of water, wind and climate change gradually formed a new relief of the mountains of Alicante, devoid of sharp limestone peaks due to crustal faults and constant climatic influence. nine0003
According to the map of the National Geographic Institute, there are about 169 hills in the mountains of Alicante with a height of 141 m – Santa Pola (Santa Pola), the area of Bajo Vinalopo (Baix Vinalopó) up to 1557 m – Aitana, Marina Baixa area.
The highest point in the province of Alicante is Pico de Aitana in the Aitana mountain range at 1558 meters, followed by Puig Campana at 1406 meters and Montcabrer in the Sierra mountains. de Mariola (la sierra de Mariola) with a height of 138
bike routes. nine0003
La Serra de la Serella, perhaps the most alpine of the mountains in the entire province of Alicante, is a rocky chain of many peaks, hills, ridges and ravines. Serella impresses with the grandeur and beauty of its rugged landscapes and offers a wide variety of tourism opportunities. nine0003
The massif of La Serra de la Serella has five peaks exceeding 1300 m above sea level and, due to its geological history, under the influence of meteorological factors, forms a wild and harsh landscape, with dangerous steep slopes due to the presence of unstable rocks.
The Serella mountains are subdivided into three large blocks: Serella del Resingle Alto y Dels Frares; Serrelia del Pla de la Casa and Serrelia de la Mallada del Lop and the channel separating the canyons of Fondo and Del Moro.
La Serra de la Serella is the guardian of a real geological treasure, commonly called “Els Frares”, which is a set of rock and limestone formations, set vertically and resembling a procession of monks. And experts call them limestone needles, mineral peaks and rocky monoliths. Tourists see these rocky views as a stone forest with magical landscapes and bizarre natural fantasy.
The hiking trail for La Serra de la Serella can be found here. nine0003
The Sierra de Mariola is a mountain formation north of Alicante, which forms a natural border with the province of Valencia.
This mountain range is one of the largest in the Valencian Community with a total area of 17,500 hectares, of which 12,543 hectares are part of the magnificent Sierra de Mariola Natural Park, which received its status from the Government of Valencia on January 8, 2002. nine0003
The Sierra de Mariola is a botanist’s paradise with 1,200 plant species unparalleled in the entire Valencian community. This fact alone makes this area a must-see, but there is something else: a world-class ethnological heritage – evidence of the economic use of these mountains since ancient times, which must be preserved and protected.
Since this area is characterized by higher rainfall than the average for the Valencian Community, this massif forms an underground reservoir from which such important rivers of the province of Alicante as the Serpis, Clariano and Vinalopó are born (Serpis, Clariano, Vinalopó). nine0003
Given this factor, most hiking routes can be done with complete confidence that there will be no shortage of water, thanks to countless shallow springs, especially when climbing San Cristófol in Cocentaina.
The highest point of the Sierra de Mariola, Montcabrer, at 1390 m, is the third highest peak in the province of Alicante after Aitana and Puig Campana.
eminent scientists, including Antonio José Cavanilles, a Spanish botanist and academician of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, call Mariola “a huge herbarium”. The abundance of aromatic, medicinal and edible plants has been known for centuries and even glorified in folklore. At present, the Sierra de Mariola massif continues to maintain its popularity as one of the most valuable and unique natural monuments. nine0003
Hiking trails for the Sierra de Mariola can be found here.
10 km from the Mediterranean coast. At the base of the mountain, it may seem that there is only one peak at the top, but in fact there are two, which is difficult to see from the foot of the mountain. nine0003
Of these two peaks, the western one has a distinct fissure or notch, and historically this feature was known colloquially as “el portell” (the gate).
Unfortunately, most of the vegetation on the northeast side of the mountain was damaged by forest fires in 2009. The fire started on January 24 of that year, when strong winds brought down a high voltage pylon. About 1,000 hectares were reduced to ashes and about 25,000 people were evacuated from 25 urbanizations. The best possible methods for restoring the mountain’s wooded areas are currently being actively developed, but full restoration takes decades. nine0003
Nevertheless, this is perhaps the most impressive and emblematic mountain, not only in Alicante, but throughout the Spanish Mediterranean. Few mountains rise as vertically as this imposing giant, reaching over 1,400 meters above sea level and located less than 10 km from the coast.
Mountains like Puig Campana do not let you get used to their bold beauty and are perceived every time with the same admiration as on the first day of acquaintance. The enchanting landscape and large-scale spaces confront us with the grandeur of nature and make us feel our own smallness. Climbing Puig Campana is a must for those who want to experience the most beautiful peaks of Alicante. nine0003
The Puig Campana hiking trail can be found here.
Antonio José Cavanilles, botanist and naturalist of the 18th century, in his travels through the Kingdom of Valencia, mentioned the town of Simas de Partegat, where there are fractures of geological origin. The scientist threw a few coins into the gorge and listened for a long time to the light rumble of their sonorous fall, thanks to the numerous ledges and cracks in the rocks. This place is still one of the attractions of the Sierra de Aitana today.
From the countless hills of the Sierra Aitana, magnificent views of the amazing Guadalest Valley open up. And the Sierra Aytana itself, the mountain range and its peak, form the “mountainous roof” of Alicante. Its massive dome is visible from many other mountains, even some very distant ones, as the Sierra Aitana always stands out with its imposing view against the background of other endless mountain ranges. nine0003
The impressive structural lines of the mountain range are due to the force of tectonic mobility, which is reflected in the prevailing jagged forms of ridges and ledges that gently descend to the Guadalest valley.
The flora and fauna of the Sierra Aitana is diverse. From the birds here you can see hawks, red partridges, owls, crows, blackbirds, swifts and swallows.
Among the animals there are wild cat, wild boar, squirrel, badger, weasel, rabbit and fox.
The flora of these places is under protection. In the Sierra Aitana grow several types of oaks, shrubs, blackthorn, white sage and some other rare plants. nine0003
The Sierra Aitana hiking trail can be found here.
And if it’s hard to choose, you want everything at once? Experts from the University of Alicante (Universidad Alicante), who believe that all the mountain ranges of the province are worthy of attention, proposed the creation of a large hiking route through the mountains of Alicante – Gran Recorrido. The length of this route is about 600 kilometers, and according to the creators, it is possible to pass it at a comfortable pace in just 39days. The proposed trail is divided into 39 stages of different difficulty levels, and tourists can combine them to their liking.

“Aitana” is 1.5 hectares inhabited by animals from five continents: here you will observe them closely and learn many interesting facts about their life, relationships and behavior. You will learn why the hippopotamus is the most dangerous animal in Africa, how much a giraffe’s heart weighs, where wild horses still live in the world and much more. nine0003
Wild but cute!
You will be curious to discover how some of the animals adapt to new conditions: they are not afraid of people, accompany the caravan of cars all the way, steal food intended for other inhabitants (and will not mind exploring a carelessly left open car). Others are eager to communicate and demand to be sure to scratch behind the ear. Many of them would certainly not refuse a sign around their necks: “I take pictures for food”! Goats, deer, llamas, ponies, giraffes, zebras roam freely along the route. Ostriches, camels, bulls and elephants, wild horses and hippos live in partially fenced areas. In closed enclosures you will see predators – lions, tigers, wolves, leopards, cougars, lynxes, as well as small animals – parrots, copibaras, noses, ferrets, porcupines, boas, raccoons, foxes and charming monkeys. nine0003

Were on an excursion in January 2020. with kids. We, as residents of the metropolis, really liked the walk in the park, the children were delighted with the animals. A lot of positive emotions, it is ideal to arrive at the time of feeding the animals. Recommended to visit!!
Julia 08/05/2019
Very good work, thank you. Nikolai arrived on time, a hundred points to him for bringing boosters for two eight-year-olds! The safe movement of children was important to me.
The journey is quite long, passed without a hitch. On the territory of the park, Nikolai told entertaining facts about animals. The children were delighted. I managed to see all the animals, pet and feed them all. I think if we were driving on our own, we would not have been able to do a lot. And these guides have been cooperating with the park staff for a long time, so we didn’t stand in line anywhere and occupied good places.
the only drawback is that it is expensive)) But we decided that it was better to pay for our company of 5 people, so as not to think about how to get there without personal transport with transfers and taxis, with old people and children.
