biography

The son of a wealthy Seville businessman with a passion for cosmology, he received his initial training from him and from the Maison d’Engauche. In 1526, he participated as a guard appointed by shipowners in the expedition of Sebastian Cabot, whose goal was to reach the Moluccas from the west. He even brought back a small amount of capital needed for an expedition in which his father was a major investor. The expedition ended in the Rio de la Plata, where Caboto abandoned the expedition. After five years of “many wars, famine and too much work,” according to what Santa Cruz himself stated in the draft prologue to his to General Islario , they left the river to return to Spain from Veracruz, passing through the Bahamas. “that we were the first to succeed in crossing said channel [from the Bahamas to reach Spain.”

Returning to Seville, according to the same autobiographical document, he devoted himself to the study of astrology and cosmography. The Council of India brings together in 1533 the chief pilot and other members to study charts and navigational instruments provided by Santa Cruz. In 1535 he began his career as a cosmographer at the Casa de Contratación in Seville as “cosmographer in charge of making charts and making instruments for navigation”, and only a year later he was appointed by the Crown “our cosmographer” with the mission of studying nautical charts and instruments with Sebastian Cabot. Santa Cruz taught the king cosmography and navigation. In 1535, he invented and proposed for his research instruments, navigational charts and an instrument for measuring longitude from the distance of the moon and planets. A year later, he invented another tool for calculating longitude from compass deviation, charting the tides with deviation, which shows his dissatisfaction with cylindrical projection systems, although nothing is known about this. adopted.

In 1539 he moved to the court of Valladolid in Toledo, where he remained for six years, created a planisphere, a map of Gibraltar and probably another map of Toledo, and began his book Astronómico Real. In 1545 he went to Lisbon to collect cartographic information. In 1551 he moved to Seville and devoted himself to completing his literary and cartographic projects. In 1554 he was summoned to Valladolid, where the court of the regent Prince Philip II was located, to participate in an association of cosmographers and astrologers to study some metal instruments proposed by the German Pedro Apiano to determine the length; The fruit of this association would be to write Books of longitudes and the way one has hitherto had to navigate , dedicated to the then King Philip II, the first systematic study of the problem of longitude.

Alonso de Santa Cruz died in 1567. Among the papers he left behind was a draft of a detailed atlas of the Iberian Peninsula, today known as the Atlas of the Escorial.

Works

As a cartographer, geographer and cosmographer, he designed and made tools for determining length and built, at the request of the Junta of Pilots, a map of the tides; in 1540 he made different planispheres with different projections; in 1542 a planisphere, of which only one copy remains in the Royal Library of Stockholm, in addition he completes the first draft Islario general de todas las islas del mundo (General Isler of all the islands of the world ), which he conceived as part of the Universal Geography, which was to be merged with Universal History ; in 1550, according to what he stated in a letter to the emperor, he made maps of various peoples. In 1555 he wrote the book Longitudines or Longidudes and Geography of Peru which he presented with a set of astrolabes and quadrants to Prince Charles. Finally, in 1566, he issued an opinion on demarcation of the Moluccas. We also note, without being able to date, that he drew up the plan of Mexico City.

The atlas included in Islario General , Stockholm Mapamundi, signed by César Carlos as “archicosmographum” and not published until 1892, is the best evidence of the cartographic innovations of Santa Cruz.

In addition, as a historian, in 1546 he wrote the General History ; he continued the work of Hernando del Pulgar, writing a chronicle of the last years of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, beginning in 1490, a slightly complicated and somewhat original work, and Chronicle of Emperor Charles V, more personal, which he wrote between 1550 and 1552; in the same years he recompiled the material for the book Arbres des lignages. He completed a translation of De origin ac rebus gestis regum Hispaniae by the Catalan Francesc Tarafa, published in Barcelona in 1562, and a year later wrote Jerónimo Zurita a severe censorship of of the Annals of the Crown of Aragon. Other works that have not been published for which a date cannot be set. It’s “Book of Coats of Arms” , “Fleece Cavalry” , “ General of Nobility” and “ What Happened in Seville during the Commons” .

In other disciplines, he wrote Virtuoosa ABC , intended for the training of Prince Charles, book Astronómico Imperial 1550, stored in the library of the Salamanki University, response to consultations de alcabala and Memorial on the Instructions for Discoverers presented to Philip II in 1556, where it was forbidden to make expeditions on behalf of the Crown and that captains carefully record data on location, land conditions and other circumstances. He also translated and edited the texts of Aristotle.

Alonso de Ojeda and his discoveries

Brief biography

Spanish navigator, conquistador Alonso Ojeda was born in Spain presumably in 1468. A brave, hardy and cruel sailor, he fought against the Moors. In 1493–1495 Alonso participated in the second expedition of Christopher Columbus to the shores of the West Indies.

In 1499-1500 Alonso Ojeda equipped his own expedition to the shores of the South American continent, which opened the coast of Guiana, Venezuela, the islands of Curacao and Aruba. During the next trip in 1502, Ojeda was haunted by setbacks. The team accused him of cheating and took him in shackles to Hispaniola. Having justified himself with difficulty, Ojeda received a position in the administration of the newly discovered lands and equipped a new expedition. Soon, four ships successfully reached the South American coast (the northern regions of modern Colombia). Here Ojeda undertook a military campaign deep into the mainland, but was defeated – the Indians killed all the Spaniards, miraculously managed to escape only the captain himself and one of the sailors.

In 1510 Alonso Ojeda created the first Spanish colony in South America: San Sebastian in the Gulf of Uraba and was appointed its governor. The colonists repelled the attacks of the Indians and suffered from a lack of food. Illnesses began, Ojeda went on a pirate ship to Hispaniola for help. After some time, the ship, half-destroyed by a storm, landed on the shores of Cuba. With adventures, the pirates, led by Ojeda, reached Santo Domingo, where everyone was arrested, and the leaders were hanged. Alonso Ojeda died in 1515 in Santo Domingo.

Discovery of the northern shores of South America

Alonso Ojeda is one of the numerous followers of Christopher Columbus. He organized his first independent journey in 1499, together with Juan de la Cosa, who in 1492, on Columbus’ first expedition to the shores of the West Indies, was the captain of his own Santa Maria carrack. A talented navigator and cartographer, Juan de la Cosa created several maps of newly discovered lands, and served as a pilot on the Ojeda expedition. Two of the three ships were outfitted by Florentine bankers, apparently with the participation of Amerigo Vespucci, who also became one of the members of the expedition. Amerigo was well versed in navigation and may have participated in the voyage as a navigator or astronomer.

Map of the northern coast of South America and the Antilles archipelago. 1706

Departing in May from Spain, three ships proceeded to the Cape Verde Islands, and from there headed southwest – along the path of the Columbus expedition. Off the coast of Africa, they captured a caravel, whose crew agreed to go with them. After 44 days, four ships reached the South American continent at about 5 °C. sh. This is how these regions are described in the letters of Amerigo Vespucci: “The new land is located in a hot zone, southwest of the equinox line … We found that the days here were equal to nights. We reached this land on the 27th day of June, when the sun is at the height of the Tropic of Cancer. We have found that this land is abundant in moisture and full of very large rivers. … The land is very pleasant and fertile, full of vast, always green forests, because the leaves never fall. The mass of fruits, they are countless and completely different from ours.

The ships of Ojeda headed along the mainland coast to the northwest and covered 1200 km. They passed the shores of modern Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, and reached the Orinoco Delta. Two ships under the command of Vespucci for some time separated from the main part of the expedition, heading southeast, but then the ships united.

A fragment of M. Waldseemüller’s map shows the coast of South America known to Europeans.

Entering one of the bays of the South American mainland, the Spaniards saw an unusual native settlement consisting of large houses built on piles. In the letters of Amerigo Vespucci we read:

“We… saw a village built like Venice on the water. There were about 44 large dwellings, like huts, built on very thick piles. They had doors or entrances in the form of drawbridges. It was possible to go from one house to another… When the natives saw us, it seemed they were frightened, as they immediately opened all the bridges. .. 22 canoes plied the sea. These canoes were like boats made from a single tree.” The Spaniards called this land “little Venice” – Venezuela.

Later, this was the name given to a large section of the southern coast of the Caribbean Sea to the Orinoco Delta. And since 1830, this name has been borne by the state. The Spaniards established friendly relations with the natives, conducted a profitable exchange with them, and even undertook a military campaign against their enemies, the cannibals of the Caribs. The firearms of the Europeans were out of competition: “… we were forced to use our artillery. When they heard the shot and saw that some of their number had fallen dead, they retreated … and fled through the mountains and forests, leaving us victorious on the battlefield with many of our dead and many wounded.

Village on stilts in Venezuela

Even in Spain, Alonso de Ojeda saw a map of the Pearl Coast (the southern coast of the Caribbean Sea), compiled by the expedition of Christopher Columbus, and hoped that he would be able to buy a lot of pearls in these parts for next to nothing. However, Ojeda was not aware that about a month before him, the expedition of Pedro Niño had visited the Pearl Coast and Margarita Island, and she had collected most of the “harvest”. Ojeda got only the remnants.

“… they are so inhuman that they surpass even animals in this respect, for they eat all the enemies they kill or take prisoner, women along with men, with such ferocity that even talking about it seems terrible.” From the letters of Amerigo Vespucci

Golden statuette of a deity, Colombia, 5th century, and a golden pendant inlaid with turquoise, Peru, 3rd century.

The expedition discovered the islands of Curaçao and Aruba, the westernmost of the Lesser Antilles. Having landed on Curacao, the Spaniards met natives of very tall stature there and called it the island of giants. On it, Ojeda left hopelessly ill, in his opinion, sailors.

When the Spaniards returned to the island a few years later, they found to their great amazement that the sailors were miraculously cured of their illnesses – alive and well. They decided to rename the island: it became known as Curacao – “Island of Healing”. This name has survived to this day. In his letters, Amerigo Vespucci describes the medical traditions of the Indians as follows: “They use various medicines during their illnesses, so different from ours that we were very surprised how it was possible to recover from their use. Many times I have seen a sick man bathed from head to toe in cold water when he was in a fever. They then lit a fire around him and made him turn for two hours until he got tired and fell asleep. Many have been healed in this way. They also use a diet, for they force the sick to starve for three days … “.

The route of the expedition of Amerigo Vespucci and Alonso de Ojeda in 1499.

In total, Ojeda explored more than 3000 km of the coast of unknown land, which had no end. This could only mean one thing – open land is not an island, but a mainland!

In June 1500 the expedition returned to Cadiz.
