Un colegio de Kenia enseña a los alumnos a disfrutar y apreciar su cultura y a sentirse orgullosos de su origen africano

“¡Soy grande! ¡Soy africano! ¡Tengo melanina!”. Los gritos de los 300 niños reunidos en una extensión de césped delante del colegio Niños en Libertad son tan fuertes que gran parte del somnoliento suburbio de la ciudad keniana de Nakuru puede oírlos. “¿Quieres que el león que llevas dentro se duerma?”, exclama Oku Kanayo, uno de los dos directores del centro, a través de un micrófono. “¡Whoa!, el poder del león está en todos los niños. Quizá no sea la criatura más grande del reino animal, pero es la más fuerte”. “¡Whoa!”, repiten los niños al unísono.

Después de unas cuantas arengas similares, Utheri Kanayo se acerca a los altavoces jadeando y pone la música que guía a los niños a las aulas. Junto con su marido Oku dirige la escuela. “Empezamos casi todos los días con un baile”, explica, “porque eso da espacio a la libertad y la alegría de los niños. Ahora que aún son pequeños, no les da tanta vergüenza su manera de bailar, así que intentamos conservar esa actitud el mayor tiempo posible”, dije Kanayo.

Mientras que la mayoría de los colegios kenianos empiezan la jornada con una tenue oración ceremonial, en este el afrobeat retumba por los altavoces. Otros centros de primaria exigen que sus alumnos lleven uniforme con corbata para los chicos y calcetines hasta la rodilla y faldas largas para las niñas. Aquí los estudiantes van vestidos con coloridas camisas hechas de tela de kitenge. Las diferencias entre el colegio Niños en Libertad y la mayoría de las escuelas de primaria de Kenia, o incluso del este de África, son notables.

“Es la primera escuela afrocéntrica del continente”, explica su codirectora con orgullo mientras conduce a un alumno perdido a su clase y sigue señalando las cosas que ella y su marido Oku hacen de otra manera en el centro. “Es un lugar en el que los niños sienten que son importantes por ser africanos”, continúa. “Les ayudamos a desarrollar su identidad africana para que disfruten de su cultura y la aprecien”.

El afrocentrismo en torno al cual Kanayo y su marido han levantado su escuela está en auge. Cada vez se publican más cómics afrocéntricos en Estados Unidos, pero también en distintos lugares de África. Está aumentando también el estreno de películas en las que una nueva conciencia africana desempeña un papel protagonista. Buen ejemplo de ello es el éxito de taquilla Black Panther, pero también la más reciente La mujer rey. El término “afrocentrismo” procede de Estados Unidos, donde tuvo su origen en las décadas de 1960 y 1970 como contrapunto al eurocentrismo generalizado. Las escuelas afrocéntricas, creadas por afroamericanos, existen allí hace tiempo.

Educar contra la falta de confianza

Utheri Kanayo no siempre fue directora de una escuela de primaria. En 2018, tras cursar diversos estudios de educación y después de una larga carrera de investigación en pedagogía, entre otras en la Universidad de Cambridge, en el Reino Unido, decidió volver a su país natal con su marido con la idea de organizar ferias educativas. “Pero cuando hablamos con los niños, vimos que tenían muy poca confianza en sí mismos y que no estaban orgullosos de su origen”, recuerda Kanayo. “Pensaban que, como africanos, estaban en desventaja o no podrían cumplir sus sueños”.

Las conversaciones con los niños dieron como fruto el nuevo método pedagógico que establece los principios de la escuela Niños en Libertad. “Con este método aprendemos que, como niño africano y negro, puedes estar orgulloso de tu color y de tu origen”, explica la directora. “Queríamos ofrecer ejemplos a los alumnos, mostrarles que hay muchísimas personas que son como ellos y que han pasado por las mismas circunstancias, y han triunfado”.

Cuando Kanayo empieza su recorrido por las aulas, queda claro que casi todo en el colegio se aparta de lo habitual en Kenia. La pedagoga señala los mapas de África que cuelgan en las paredes por todas partes, los pósteres que muestran cómo las lenguas bantúes se han expandido por el continente, los coloridos adornos que bordean las pizarras y las figuras colgadas junto a la entrada de las clases.

“Cada aula lleva el nombre de un emblema africano”, explica mientras se para junto a la foto de un esqueleto. “Aquí tenemos una fotografía de Dinkinesh, el esqueleto humanoide más completo que se conoce. La hemos puesto aquí para mostrar que toda la vida empezó con una mujer negra. Independientemente del color o la raza, la vida empezó en África”. A la pregunta de si se trata del esqueleto de 3,2 millones de años conocido como Lucy, Kanayo responde con una sonrisa: “Los blancos la llaman Lucy, pero en África la llamamos Dinkinesh”.

En el aula clase, el profesor Maina Gikuchi se encuentra frente al segundo grupo más antiguo del colegio. En este momento la clase no trata de historia o cultura africana; también hay que seguir el plan de estudios oficial de Kenia. Cuando Gichuki nombra a los alumnos para que respondan a sus preguntas, llama la atención que ninguno tenga un nombre inglés como Peter, Schola o David. En Kenia es costumbre poner dos nombres a los niños: uno “africano” y uno inglés. “Aquí solo usamos los nombres africanos”, explica Otieno, de 11 años. “Mi nombre inglés es David Toby. Pero, si somos africanos, ¿por qué tenemos que adaptarnos y usar nombres ingleses?”.

Esto también forma parte de los principios afrocéntricos del colegio Niños en Libertad. “Muchos kenianos se avergüenzan de su nombre africano”, explica Kanayo, “y por eso utilizan el inglés. Eso significa que una parte importante de tu identidad se pierde: toda la información sobre tu origen o tu procedencia étnica ha desaparecido. Queremos que los niños entiendan que es un privilegio y un absoluto honor ser africanos. Los africanos llevan mucho tiempo oyendo que son inferiores, que necesitan que les ayuden o les enseñen. Con nuestro afrocentrismo queremos mostrar a los niños que África también es una fuente de ciencia, creatividad e inteligencia, y que siempre lo ha sido”.

El objetivo de las clases sobre modelos africanos es dar a los niños más confianza en sí mismos. “Nuestros alumnos necesitan historias positivas de personas como ellos”, reflexiona Kanayo. “Nosotros les hacemos ver que ha habido otros africanos que han logrado grandes cosas”. Así, a los niños se les enseña ejemplos africanos del pasado. “Por ejemplo, enseñamos a nuestros niños el imperio de Man Musa, el hombre más rico que ha existido”, explica la codirectora. “Los alumnos aprenden que hubo una época en la que África no necesitaba ayuda externa para extraer materias primas y minerales y venderlos. Eso demuestra que el continente podría haber sido muy rico”.

Esta imagen de una África alternativa y floreciente vuelve a repetirse a menudo. Poco después, Kanayo señala un póster en el que se ve a un soldado africano con una boina roja: Thomas Sankara, el primer presidente de Burkina Faso. “Igual que el congoleño Patrice Lumumba, es un héroe de la resistencia asesinado”, explica nuestra guía. “Se opusieron a la injerencia colonial, gobernaron grandes economías y pagaron por ello con su vida. África habría sido muy diferente si no los hubieran matado”.

Hay quien dice que el afrocentrismo nos separa, pero la verdad es que nos conecta. En realidad, nuestras diferencias nos hacen más fuertes”.

Según el matrimonio Kanayo, las escuelas kenianas todavía se parecen a las del sistema escolar británico que los ingleses introdujeron en Kenia en época colonial. El número creciente de escuelas internacionales que preparan a niños kenianos para que estudien en el extranjero utiliza incluso el plan de estudios británico. “Lo que es normal en Europa o en Gran Bretaña se ha exportado a Kenia”, lamenta Kanayo con el ceño fruncido. “Hemos adoptado algo que no es nuestro. La manera británica de educar y aprender nos ha sido impuesta, no es africana. Por eso nosotros lo hacemos de otra manera”.

El afrocentrismo que une

Sin embargo, África no es un país, sino un continente gigantesco lleno de diversidad. Solo en Kenia hay 44 grupos de población reconocidos oficialmente, muchos de los cuales hablan su propia lengua y tienen sus propias costumbres. ¿No es precisamente una actitud colonial educar a los niños como “africanos”? Kanayo se ríe. “Hay quien dice que el afrocentrismo nos separa”, responde, “pero si quiere saber mi opinión, la verdad es que nos conecta. Los colonizadores salieron ganando al dividirnos para poder gobernarnos. La cultura de nuestro colonizador todavía está presente. Incluso el inglés que yo hablo no es mío. No podemos cambiar ni deshacer nada, pero podemos aprender de ello. En realidad, nuestras diferencias nos hacen más fuertes”.

Una de las madres que ha enviado a sus hijos a la escuela de los Kanayo es Clare Nyaboke. “Me sorprendió descubrir que mis hijos de repente hablaban la lengua de mis padres”, dice. Sus hijos Kerama, de diez años, y Kingoina, de ocho, ahora pueden comunicarse con sus abuelos, mientras que la propia Nyaboke ya no habla esa lengua. “Cuando era niña nunca aprendí a ser ambiciosa”, continúa. “Nunca se nos enseñó nada de nuestra cultura, no se nos permitía hablar nuestras lenguas tradicionales”. Piensa que, ahora, sus hijos tienen más confianza en sí mismos. “Saben que son fuertes y que pueden llegar a ser lo que quieran”.

Pero la escuela afrocéntrica no está al alcance de todos los kenianos. La matrícula anual es de unos 900 euros, una cantidad que la mayoría de la población de Kenia no se puede permitir. “En un mundo ideal, cualquier niño podría venir a este colegio”, explica Kanayo, “por eso estamos intentando recaudar dinero con una fundación para acoger también a niños de familias menos favorecidas”. Según la cofundadora del colegio, las matrículas del 15% de los alumnos se pagan con esas becas. El centro cuenta actualmente con 300 alumnos, una cifra que aumenta en 100 estudiantes cada año.

En las instalaciones de la escuela también se ve que la expansión es posible. En la parte superior del edificio, la estructura de acero que sobresale del hormigón indica que se está proyectando una cuarta planta. Y en una esquina, cerca de una pequeña granja y de unos aguacates se está excavando una piscina para poder dar también clases de natación. En enero, la escuela tendrá además un grupo de secundaria, que en un principio se alojará en el mismo edificio que la escuela primaria.

Los Kanayo no ocultan sus ambiciones. Por ejemplo, la pareja espera que su método pedagógico se convierta en “el patrón de referencia para los niños negros”, y que se adopte en todo el mundo. “En el pasado, África fue líder en innovación, educación y comercio”, afirma Kanayo. “Grandes reinos llegaron y se fueron. Es verdad que después vinieron la esclavitud y la colonización, pero esos días ya han pasado. Estábamos en una fase de depresión, pero África está resurgiendo. Nos encontramos en vísperas de una nueva era, y los africanos se levantan”.

One of the most indisputable prizes of the 92nd Oscar was awarded in the Best Soundtrack nomination. The figurine went to the Icelandic Hildur Gudnadouttir for the music for «Joker», although, perhaps, film academics also kept in mind the impressive work of the cellist and composer on the TV series «Chernobyl». Be that as it may, the victory of Gudnadouttir is a joyful, important event and even, perhaps, capable of influencing the principles and rules of music nominations in the world’s leading film awards. This, at least, is what Artyom Makarsky hopes.

“The point is not that the film was released on the Internet at the same time as the release in Los Angeles, but that, according to the regulations, it had to be shown in the cinema at least three times a day, while it was shown only twice per day, ”this is how a representative of the Film Academy commented on the news that the last soundtrack of the great film composer Johan Johansson, written by him for the film Mandy, was not admitted to the Oscar.

News about the disqualification of soundtracks for a variety of films — from auteur films to blockbusters — appears regularly, but no one notices them. In 2008, Jonny Greenwood was not allowed to the Oscars due to the fact that in «Oil», among other things, the old fifteen-minute composition of the musician «Popcorn Superhet Receiver» sounded, as well as another half hour of music not written specifically for the film. By 2017, Greenwood and Paul Thomas Anderson had corrected themselves — and «Phantom Thread» received a nomination for «Best Soundtrack», but they were surpassed by Alexandre Desplat, for whom this was already the second statuette and the ninth nomination (by 2020 he already has eleven of them).

In the last couple of years, Oscars for best soundtracks have gone to really deserving composers, innovators who go against the standard approach to film music, making atypical sound design for the film. Last year, the statuette went to Ludwig Göransson with «Black Panther» — in addition to music for films and TV shows, he worked (as a producer) on hip-hop and R&B, because of which he perfectly managed to create a mixture of average music of the peoples of Africa, hip-hop , a classic soundtrack and even borrowings from the genre of modern African electronics gcom.

The winner of this year, Hildur Gudnadouttir, saw the script for The Joker six months before filming, and when creating music, she was based primarily on her feelings of the hero and the problems that confront him both in reality and in his inner world. Gudnadouttir’s music contrasts perfectly with the music from the seventies that sounds in the film, emphasizing the gloominess of Gotham and the psychological state of the protagonist. Both Göransson and Gudnadouttir are the authors of the most musically interesting soundtracks among those presented in categories in which the same faces constantly flicker, their Oscar is deserved, but it is worth remembering that not everyone is still allowed to get to it.

This does not mean that only “old school” representatives are allowed to the Oscars — it is worth remembering the victory of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross with The Social Network, but for the most part the list of not only winners, but also the nominees of recent years is one and the same last names. The exceptions are the excellent 2016, in which Mika Levy and her uncomfortable soundtrack to Pablo Larraina’s Jackie, Nicholas Brittell, who used southern hip-hop methods when writing music for Moonlight, and neoclassical Hauschka , who, together with Dustin O’Halorran, recorded compositions for The Lion. Nevertheless, all of them could not even dream of the award that Justin Hurwitz expectedly received for the nostalgic La La Land.

This year’s Oscars, apart from the triumph of «Parasite», tried to balance between nostalgia in the face of the invited Eminem with a musical number and modernity, which was answered by constant monologues about diversity, uttered from the stage by the Oscar presenters. Like a year ago, the Oscars this year are also awarded by the stars of films that seemed to the Academy unworthy of the Oscar, but their composition is really quite diverse — which cannot be said about those who receive these awards.

Ryuichi Sakamoto, upon learning that his soundtrack to The Revenant — at that time it seemed to many that the last in his career before his well-deserved retirement — was disqualified, commented on this in the following vein: «It was done within the rules, but perhaps should the rules be changed? For more than a year now, there has been talk that the Oscars are stubbornly trying to prioritize traditionalists who record with an orchestra and from notes and cannot afford quotes from other works — thus, a small and not the most noticeable nomination becomes a mirror of the award itself, which cannot decide to change. For the Oscars, individuality is still important, in acting nominations they still like to give an award for a feat, for jumping above your head; soundtracks are judged the same way. Until the rules are changed, neither Daniel Lopatin (who masterfully used Haydn on the Uncut Gems soundtrack) nor Bobby Krlik, who wrote Solstice’s music that resembles a carefully dissected soundtrack to some other film, nor Disasterpiece, constantly working with David Robert Mitchell and in his work for «Under the Silver Lake» consciously quoting music for old noirs. However, Nino Rota was once deprived of an Oscar when it was found out that he had quoted himself in the theme of love for The Godfather: perhaps being in the company of those disqualified from the Oscar is not so bad.
