El folk rock, en un sentido amplio, es un género musical que combina elementos de la música folk, el blues y el rock. Sin embargo, el término se suele usar preferentemente, aunque no exclusivamente, en referencia a la música de fusión surgida en los Estados Unidos y en el Reino Unido, a mediados de los años sesenta, resultado de la incorporación de elementos del rock, sobre todo del rock de la Costa Oeste, y especialmente en el terreno instrumental y rítmico, a la música de tradición folclórica local. Algunos autores denominaron este género folk pop.[1] En muchos aspectos, el folk rock se solapa con otras denominaciones aplicadas a fusiones de música tradicional estadounidense y rock, como es el caso del country rock o del llamado rock sureño.[cita requerida]
Los ejemplos de fusión de rock o pop y música folclórica de otros lugares del mundo u otras culturas, suelen recibir denominaciones más específicas (zydeco, celtic fusion, world music, etc. ), aunque la etiqueta “folk rock” se aplicó también, de forma usual, a la música de los grupos británicos de esa misma época.
La iconografía tradicional del folk rock sitúa el nacimiento del género en el giro dado por Bob Dylan a su música en el Festival de Newport de 1965, en coincidencia con el triunfo de las propuestas discográficas de The Byrds, pero esto no deja de ser un convencionalismo.[2] En realidad, el proceso se había iniciado a finales de la década de 1950, con la fuerte evolución sufrida por el bluegrass, las innovaciones que fueron consolidándose a través del Grand Ole Opry y la aparición de grupos de gran proyección popular entre los jóvenes. En cualquier caso, para el último tercio de la década de 1960, el folk rock aparece ya como un estilo consolidado, tanto en los Estados Unidos como en el Reino Unido.

El primer grupo que se encaminó por esta vía fue el Kingston Trio,[3] que ya había conseguido una gran proyección hacia 1957, con su versión “pop” del tema “Tom Dooley”, que vendió tres millones de unidades.[4] Tras ellos, grupos como los New Lost City Ramblers, The Weavers, Peter, Paul & Mary o Scottsville Squirrel Barkers, grupo este que incluía a músicos tan esenciales como Chris Hillman o Bernie Leadon,[5] fueron derivando desde posiciones más puramente folkies hacia planteamientos cercanos a la música pop.[cita requerida]
El gran paso hacía la concienciación del folk-rock como género, como ya se ha dicho, se dio con los arreglos claramente eléctricos de The Byrds y Bob Dylan, a partir de 1965. Hay que recordar que, en aquella época, el folk en Estados Unidos era un vehículo para expresar la crítica y el descontento con la sociedad establecida y muy especialmente con la guerra de Vietnam. Prueba de ello eran las reivindicativas letras de sus dos máximos exponentes en ese momento: Joan Báez y el propio Bob Dylan. El público folk estaba formado fundamentalmente por activistas de izquierda y universitarios progresistas, que consideraban al rock y el pop como géneros superficiales y poco comprometidos.
Paralelamente, ya en la segunda mitad de los años sesenta, en Gran Bretaña, algunos grupos de formación pop, asumieron la tradición de la música medieval inglesa, como es el caso de Pentangle o Fairport Convention, cuyo bajista Ashley Hutchings fundó otro ícono del folk-pop británico, Steeleye Span. Junto a ellos, otros músicos investigaron en la tradición celta, estableciendo su propia vía de desarrollo, diferenciada de la anterior.
Con la llegada de los años setenta, el género se asentó con grupos como Country Joe & The Fish, Buffalo Springfield, Eagles y otros, evolucionando de forma paralela al country rock.
El resultado sonoro se resume en apretadas armonías vocales y una instrumentación relativamente “limpia”, es decir, sin demasiados efectos de distorsión o de pedales para los instrumentos eléctricos. Dylan incorporó como fórmula característica en sus arreglos el piano interpretado al estilo Country (“Just like Tom Thumb´s blues”), o Gospel (Like a Rolling Stone), y -muy destacadamente- el órgano Hammond, un instrumento tradicionalmente usado en templos e iglesias de todos los cultos en los Estados Unidos.
Asimismo, también mantuvo en sus interpretaciones “eléctricas” el uso de la Armónica diatónica, instrumento de viento de sencilla construcción muy claramente identificado con el folk y el blues. La presencia de estos instrumentos se tornó habitual en los arreglos de numerosos artistas del género, dotándolo de una sonoridad muy característica y representativa de la música rock con raíces tradicionales. El repertorio se tomó, en parte, de fuentes populares, pero esencialmente se utilizaron composiciones propias de los artistas, realizadas con estructuras y melodías con claras reminiscencias del folk escocés, británico e irlandés, que fueron las fuentes originales del folclore estadounidense, y en especial del bluegrass.
Hacían canciones con una fuerte carga política y social que iban desde el Rock Psicodélico hasta el folk pop acústico, en las que destacaban sus características armonías vocales. Relacionados con ellos, el grupo Manassas.
Se suicidó en 1974 a los veintiséis años.

A painting by the Brazilian modernist artist Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973), one of the most famous in Latin American art of the 20th century, stolen from a private collection, was discovered under the bed of Gabriel Nicolau Traslavigny Hafliger, in whose house in Rio de Janeiro was searched.
Hafliger is one of three allegedly involved in a complex scheme to extort funds and steal art from an elderly woman, the widow of a well-known art dealer.
Tarsila do Amaral’s found work, The Setting Sun (1929), was written by her at the peak of her career and is valued at 250 million reais ($50 million). The painting, depicting animals basking in the setting sun, was part of the artist’s retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 2018.

Tarsila do Amaral was born into a coffee plantation family in São Paulo. In her early years she studied piano, sculpture and drawing. At 19At the age of 20 she went to France, to the Académie Julian, the famous Parisian art school. Coming to Paris again and again, she met the avant-garde writer Blaise Cendrars, the artists Albert Gleizes and Fernand Léger.
In the 1920s, Tarsila do Amaral developed her own style – energetic and sensual, in which she painted landscapes and human figures. A trip to the Soviet Union in 1931 prompted her to create works on socio-political subjects, but in the 1950s she returned to her signature landscapes.
