History and Origin

Caleb is a Jewish male name. The Hebrew spelling of the name Caleb – כלב – is identical to the spelling of the word “dog” – “kelev”. The compilation of the Bible predates thousands of years the introduction of the Nikkud system of diacritics, which modern Hebrew uses to represent vowels. Thus, it is difficult to ascertain how the name was originally pronounced. Many books and websites list the meaning of “Caleb” as “Dog”. It is noteworthy that many biblical figures bore animal names, including names that would have been considered offensive in the sensibilities of later times, such as the female prophet Hulda, whose name means “weasel”. In some traditions, Caleb being a “dog” symbolizes his devotion to God.

An alternative Hebrew meaning suggested for “Kaleb” is “faithful, devoted, wholeheartedly, bold, brave”. This is based on the fact that it is actually a compound word, a phenomenon quite common in Hebrew. Col (כל, Caf + Lamed) = “all” or “whole”; Lion (לב, Lamed + Bet) = “heart”. So Caleb (or Kalev as pronounced in Hebrew) would actually mean “with all my heart”. This may be due to the fact that the biblical Caleb, companion of Moses and Joshua, was known for his shrewd powers of observation and fearlessness in the face of overwhelming odds.

Another plausible origin is the transposition of a name found in other ancient Semitic languages such as Phoenician and Ugaritic, which means “servant of the Lord” [1].

The early medieval king Kaleb of Aksum was the most famous monarch of this kingdom (in present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea). The name “Caleb” was popular among the English Puritans, and was brought to America by them.

N.B. Automatic translation into Russian (*).

Biblical: Name brought by an early Israelite, one of only two of those who established with Moses from Egypt to live long enough to enter the promised land (numbers 26:65). The name, which is related to the Hebrew word for “dog”, is said in some traditions to symbolize his rabid devotion to God. It was popular among the Puritans and was introduced by them to America, where it is still used.
