A woman’s hat = a hat for a woman

A boy’s name = a name for a boy

A bird’s egg = an egg laid by a bird

USO

Usamos genitivo sajón cuando:

Ejemplo: John´s job is boring.
  2. El primer elemento es un animal. Ejemplo: the bird´s legs = las piernas del pájaro.
Ejemplo: Spain´s monuments are very nice.

  • I love Madonna’s new song
Me encanta la nueva canción de Madona
Para expresiones de tiempo:
  • A Day’s Wait

  • I like the size of the iphone

  • I work in the financial district of New York
I work in New York’s financial district

The butcher’s (shop).

The butcher’s
(La carnicería.)

A greengrocer’s
(Una frutería.)

A fishmonger’s
(Una pescadería.)

The baker’s
(La panadería.)

A stationer’s.
(Una papelería.)

I’m going to the hairdresser’s.

Sylvia’s shoe shop.
(La zapatería de Sylvia.)

St Paul’s Cathedral.
(La Catedral de San Pablo.)

Nelson’s Column.
(La Columna de Nelson – estatua en Trafalgar Square, Londres.)

El genitivo sajón y el domicilio.

I’m going to John’s (house).
(Voy a la casa de John.)

There’s a party at Mary’s (house).

I went at the Smiths’ yesterday.

That house is the Jones’s.
(Esa casa es de los Jones.)

Let’s go to John and Mary’s
(Vamos a la casa de John y Mary.)

The Oxford Women’s Club.

Children’s toys.

People’s free time.

My father’s brother’s son is my cousin.

The report’s conclusions.
(Las conclusiones del informe.)

The plan’s importance.
(La importancia del plan.)

The committee’s proposals.
(Las propuestas del comité.)

También, la forma con «of» es posible: «The decision of the committee», etc.

Nombres de los lugares:

Madrid’s football teams.
(Los equipos de fútbol de Madrid.)

Seville’s beauty.
(La belleza de Sevilla.)

England’s green fields.
(Las praderas de Inglaterra.)

Monday’s meeting.
(La reunión del lunes.)

This week’s conference.
(La conferencia de esta semana.)

Last year’s World Cup Final.
(La Copa Mundial del año pasado.)

Formación del genitivo sajón

Tenemos 3 elementos:

  • 1º la persona
  • 2º ‘s

Se puede decir ¿the house of Maria is big?

¿cuándo usamos el genitivo sajón y cuándo ‘of’?.

Veamos un ejemplo primero:

My mother’s car is broken
El coche de mi madre está averiado

Para formar el genitivo sajón:

  • The car of my mother

  • My mother’s car is broken

Our boss’s mother was involved in a car accident

What do you think about players’ salaries?

Caso especial: Varios poseedores

Europe’s and America’s trade with Africa is very low

John and Jane’s child is Alex

I am waiting for you at Sam’s (house)

We were at the hairdresser’s (shop) yesterday

  1. James’ dog is lovely
  2. James’s dog is lovely

Compara:

  • The chidren’s toys are in the pool = children es un plural irregular

Más plurales irregulares que nos podemos encontrar son: men, women, people, etc.

Errores comunes

  • This is John’s pen (y no, the John’s pen).
  • Cleopatra’s Needle (y no, the Cleopatra’s Needle).
(La Aguja de Cleopatra – estatua en Londres)
  • Parliament’s decision (y no, the Parliament’s decision).
    (La decisión del Parlamento.)

Pero, sí podemos decir:

  • The President’s men.
    (Los hombres del Presidente.)
  • The Queen’s speech.

I am the Queen»; «Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States!».

  • The car [adjetivo] door [sustantivo] (not, the car’s door).
    (La puerta del coche.)
  • The church roof (not, the church’s roof).
    (El tejado de la iglesia.)
  • The/My watch battery.

  • A supermarket trolley.
  • Shirt buttons.
(El tipo de botones utilizados para camisas.)
  • A watch battery.

  • The end of the film (y no, the film end).
    (El final de la película.)
  • The top of the bottle («the bottle top» significa el tapón de la botella).

  • The house of my parents (no se suele decir).
    (la casa de mis padres.)

Es mucho más común:

  • My parents’ house.

Genitivo doble.

  • He is a friend of my mother’s.
(Él es amigo de mi madre.)
  • She’s a cousin of the King’s.

  • She is a friend of ours.
    (Ella es amiga mía.)
  • John is a work colleague of his.

The first letter designates a series of the state number of the vehicle. Three digits indicate the registration number of the vehicle, which is assigned by the traffic police. The next three letters also designate the series of the state number of the vehicle.

These include the image of the state emblem, flag, the abbreviation of the Russian Federation, as well as the code of the region in which the vehicle is registered.

License plates in Russia: types, codes and regions

Types of license plates

Registration numbers in Russia differ by the type of vehicle – personal, commercial or departmental – and by size, type of attachment, number of lines . In total there are 28 types of license plates , and they can have one of 5 colors .

Personal transport

This group includes six types of plates ( types 1, 1A, type 2, types 4, 4A and 4B ) – these are registration plates cars, trucks, regular buses and buses with a non-standard attachment point , as well as motorcycles, mopeds and all-terrain vehicles.

At the top, the well-known type 1 number. At the bottom, type 1A for vehicles with a non-standard attachment point. Some buses or, for example, Japanese cars have this.

Type 2 numbers – registration plates issued to trailers and semi-trailers. The format of such a number is two letters followed by four numbers.

Registration plate for motorcycles – type 4 – is installed in one place, at the rear of the vehicle. And in the sign format, numbers and black letters are used (four numbers in the top line, two letters in the bottom).

Signs for mopeds – type 4B – also consist of black numbers and letters, only here two letters and two numbers are used in the top line and two more letters in the bottom line. Before the introduction of the new GOST, mopeds were registered with type numbers 4.

Taxi and equipment

The group with types 1B and 3 includes commercial vehicles – taxi , municipal buses or minibuses , as well as tractors , self-propelled road-building and other machines and trailers (semi-trailers) to them.

Yellow numbers are a sure sign that you have the registration plate of a taxi or other vehicle carrying passengers. Type 1B.

License plate for tractors and other road equipment – type 3 – contains four digits (on the top line), two letters (on the bottom line) and a region code in the lower right corner.

Transport of international (interstate) organizations

Type 9 registration plates belong to cars of heads of diplomatic missions . Signs of type 10 – for cars, trucks and buses of diplomatic missions, consular offices , organizations and their employees accredited at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Signs of type 11 – for motorcycles of diplomatic missions, consular offices and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Finding diplomatic numbers in traffic is easy. This is red plate with white letters and numbers. As a rule, such a number consists of four parts and you can “read” it like this :

  1. The first three digits of the code are the state , which owns the vehicle. For example, 001 is UK; 002 – Germany; 004 – USA.
  2. The following letter or letters is the type of organization and official rank: diplomat, ambassador, consul. So, the letter prefix CD means that the car is registered to the head of the embassy or diplomatic mission; SS – consul or person who is the head of the consulate; D – another person of the consulate who has diplomatic status; T – a badge issued for a car (motorcycle) of an employee who does not have diplomatic status (administrative and technical staff).
  3. The numerical values below are the serial number of the car in the department.
  4. The last digits are the region in which the car is registered.

Badges of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation

Automobile numbers of military formations , in other words military numbers, have a black background with white letters and numbers . Type 5 signs are used on cars, trucks and buses. Type 6 – on car trailers and semi-trailers. Type 7 – registration plates for tractors, self-propelled road-building and other machines and trailers (semi-trailers) for them. Type 8 signs for motorcycles and off-road motor vehicles.

The format of signs for cars and trucks is four digits and then two letters, the format of registration plates for motorcycles, trailers and other equipment in this group is similar to the corresponding civil vehicles.

Codes for black plates do not match Russian region indices on regular license plates. The digital value in place of the region number means belonging of car to a specific Russian military district or branch of service .

Transport of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Russian Guard

Registration plates of type 20, 21 and 22 are assigned to the internal affairs bodies and the federal service of the National Guard Troops . The distinctive color of such numbers is blue.

License plates for cars and trucks of the Ministry of Internal Affairs contain one letter followed by four digits. On the right side of the number is region code of the Russian Federation. However, there is an exception for vehicles owned directly by the ministry. “Federal” number of the Ministry of Internal Affairs – index 77.

Transit numbers

Signs of this group – temporary registration . Transit numbers are assigned to unregistered vehicles or vehicles deregistered . According to the law, they must be exchanged for permanent numbers within the prescribed period: five days.

Transit registration numbers of three types – 16, 17 and 18 – were recently made on paper. In fact, they have not been issued since 2013.

Paper signs were not perceived by cameras for automatic recording of violations, and replaced the old transit numbers with the new format (type 15): are no longer issued due to changes in the rules for registering vehicles. But this type of number plate is assigned to exported cars that irrevocably leave the borders of the Russian Federation.

In addition, for cars leaving for export , another license plate format is provided – two letters and then three digits – and on the left side of the number the letter “T” is put .

Plates for vintage and sports cars

Badges type 23-28 issued for sports or vintage cars and motorcycles . The shape of the plates corresponds to non-standard fastenings on this vehicle.

GOST is already in force for retro cars, according to which special numbers with the letter “K” – classic . Registration plates for sports cars include an additional character “C”.

Region codes

Before , Russian region codes on license plates consisted of two numeric characters (from 01 to 89) according to the list of subjects of the Russian Federation .
