    How to use multiple monitors in Windows

    After you connect your Windows 11 PC to external displays, you can configure settings for each of them.

    Before you start

    Make sure to connect properly before changing external monitor settings. Here’s what you can do:

    • Connect the cables correctly to the computer or docking station.

    • Check for Windows updates. To check for updates, select Start , then search for Settings . Select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.

    Tip: If you are using a wireless video adapter, connect to the HDMI port on your new TV and then wirelessly connect your computer to it. After connecting the wireless display adapter to your TV, go to your Windows 11 PC, press Windows key + K, to open Cast, then select the wireless display adapter.

    Changing the order of monitors

    This option is displayed if Windows detects multiple monitors. Each monitor will be numbered for easy identification.

    Monitor identification

    To find out which number corresponds to the display, select Start and then search for options . Select Options > System > Display > Identify . The number assigned to it will appear on the monitor screen.

    Monitor detection

    If you have connected another display and it is not shown in the settings, select Start > Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect .

    Monitor ordering

    If you have multiple monitors, you can change their order. This is handy if you want your monitors to match their setup in your home or office. In the Display options section, select and drag the monitor where you want. Do this for all monitors that need to be moved. Once you have the desired location, press Apply . Test your new layout by moving your mouse on different monitors to make sure they work properly.

For example, you will need to rotate your external monitor to use it in portrait orientation instead of landscape.

    To change what is displayed on your displays, press the Windows key + P . Here are the options you can choose from.

    If required:

    Select

    View items on only one monitor.

    Computer screen only

    View the same items on all monitors.

    Repetitive

    View desktop on multiple screens. When extending monitors, you can move items between the two screens.

    Extend

    Only view everything on the second monitor.
