Don Antonio de Echeverze chose the largest and newest galleon, the Nuestra Señora del Carmen, as captain of his fleet. It was a newly built ship with a displacement of 713 tons, armed with 72 guns. In Echeverza’s fleet, the Carmen, like all other ships, was private property. The Spanish government only entered into an agreement with shipowners for their use to transport valuables from the New World.
As soon as the galleons reached Cartagena, messengers were sent to the Peruvian mines with a demand to immediately transport all the wealth extracted during the year. In addition, pearls were brought from Margarita Island, mined there by Indian divers.
According to the ship’s manifest, the following goods were loaded on board the Carmen:
79,967 pesos in gold bars and doubloons;
309 castellanos gold powder;
1175 pesos of the ship’s treasury;
3 gold chains;
7,766 pounds of cocoa and other colonial goods.
From Cartagena, the fleet headed for Portobello, where it stayed all winter. After that, the galleons headed for Havana to await the armada of General Ubilla, who was delayed in arriving from Veracruz due to stormy weather. Echeverze spent this time repairing his ships in the docks of Havana and loading a cargo of tobacco, which was in great demand in Europe. After joining the two fleets, the galleons finally left Havana and headed towards Spain.
As the Spanish sailboats approached the narrowest part of the Bahama Canal, a hurricane broke out. On the captain, the sailors urgently lowered all the upper sails and battened down all the hatches. When the wind increased even more, we had to lower all the others, except for the jib on the bowsprit. Soon the waves carried the bowsprit and the tops of the masts onto the Carmen. Gear fell into the water, making it difficult to control the ship. The galleon ceased to obey the helm. Huge waves knocked out the windows at the stern and began to flood the lower rooms. Despite all the damage, the ship still floated, but was too close to the Florida reefs. The sound of the surf in the dark made me give up both anchors to keep from hitting the reefs. This briefly delayed the death of the Carmen. Water entered the holds too quickly, and the pumps could not cope. The captain ordered to lighten the ship. Part of the ballast and several guns were thrown overboard. Despite the fact that one of the anchors held back the galleon, the sandy ground did not allow it to securely stay in one place, it still slowly drifted towards the reefs. Caught up at 900 feet from the shore, the galleon hit the starboard side of the outer reef ridge. Sea water rushed into the holes that formed, and the ship sank in a depth of 19 feet. Several people died.
As soon as the hurricane passed, the hull was still above the water level, and the sailors lowered one of the big boats. The survivors began to make their way ashore, pulling everything that could be salvaged out of the water, and most of the cargo was salvaged immediately after the crash. They set up a small camp. Navigator Sebastian Mendez headed to San Augustin to report the crash.
In 1965 galleon guns were found on the bottom near the shore. Mel Fisher and his team have been working here since 1969. Here he found 19 guns and 2 large anchors. Also found were 149 gold coins, many bars of gold, 2 beautiful gold crosses adorned with pearls, and over 40 pounds of silver coins. These were the most successful works at the crash site.
In 1985, local resident Richard McAllister and his rescue team also worked on the wreck of the Carmen. They found traces of golden sand, which was carried by waves along the seabed. The divers collected several pounds of gold sand and some gold jewelry. John Brandon of Fort Pierce, who worked at the site at 1986, managed to find 5 gold coins within a few days.
It is believed that a significant portion of the galleon’s cargo remained on the bottom, randomly distributed over a large 100 x 100 foot space approximately 900 feet offshore at the south end of Vero Beach.
