For children about art: Diego Velasquez “Breakfast”
Diego Velasquez “Breakfast” – watch together with the child and answer his tricky questions. Cheat sheet from Cultural Cat
Who are these people, are they famous, why did the artist choose them?
Specifically, we do not know these people, moreover, Velasquez used the same faces in several of his other works. They say that the young man on the right is generally written off from the artist himself. This picture is an illustration of the ordinary life that the master observed around him at the beginning of the 17th century in Spain.
Why is there so little food on the table?
The heroes are in a tavern, where they do not come for luxurious food. We see a bowl of fish, bread and beer – perhaps this is all that the young men had enough money for. And a couple of pomegranates in Spain can just be picked from a tree along the way.
They are very poor, but they still smile?
Quite right! Velasquez was a court painter and painted portraits of kings and counts, but he loved the common people much more – for their optimism, fun, openness of life. At the very beginning of his creative life, he created many such works. And why be sad when there is bread and beer, a friend is nearby, and even a chance to chat with an old man – he probably has a lot of interesting stories?
Why is the picture so dark?
It’s really gloomy, but don’t forget where it’s happening – it’s a small tavern, in Velasquez’s time they were called “bodegones”, and even a series of his works with a similar plot began to be called the same. The lighting there is not good. But the front edge of the table is brightly lit, there is a sharp contrast! Light and shadow on the faces are written very accurately. Velasquez borrowed these techniques from the famous painter whom he admired – Caravaggio.
Are there three or four people?
At first, it really seems to us that a waiter is standing behind the table, ready to add beer to the heroes, but looking closely, we notice that in the background there is only a hat and a neatly hung collar, and one of the young men is holding a decanter in his hand. Velasquez played a trick on us!
Why does it seem to us that the knife is about to fall out of the picture?
This effect is due to the skillfully written shadow — the loaf of bread and the knife seem to lie on the very edge of the table, and their shadows fall on the vertical surface of the tablecloth, and since the tablecloth is snow-white and the light is very bright, the shadows are long and expressive. And it seems to us that everything is real, right?
How was the painting made?
At the bottom, under each masterpiece, we see a small plate – a label. It says who, when and from what materials it was created. Here we read: “Canvas, oil paints.” Here is the answer! Of course, the canvas still needs to be primed so that the paint holds well, and varnish everything on top.
Is it cheaper than a portrait of a king?
When it was first created, of course, it was cheaper. After all, portraits of crowned persons were hung in castles and presented to allies, they made up galleries for posterity … But now these works are equally valuable. Just imagine – a picture that has come down to our days from 1617! She survived the change of frames, transportation, bad weather, and thanks to the curators and restorers – all the chemical processes that go on inside between the primer, paints and varnish are controlled, and the picture is not allowed to destroy itself from the inside.
